Predeparture Thoughts

Before leaving to Italy, I have many hopes for what to expect of Italy. This is my first time traveling to Italy but having grown up in Boston and visiting the North End as well as watching shows such as Cake Boss and movies, I have developed some expectations for what Italy will be like. I expect to eat a lot of good pasta and pizza and food but different than what I have eaten before. I also have the preconceived notion that family is valued very highly and more generations live together. I also assume that the people will be very friendly and hospitable because of  their familial nature. I think it will be difficult and at times frustrating even not knowing the language since that is a great way to immerse myself into the culture. I hope to be respectful and try to learn their customs by watching and being patient with any discrepancies that may arise as well as try to put aside my immediate reactions and to rather mimic theirs. I hope to experience the culture by not only observing others but interacting with the locals as best possible to learn about their lifestyles as well as trying new foods, listening to new music, and visiting museums to learn Italian history.
